Blaufränkisch Altenberg | Gols, Burgenland, Austria
This is the wine you open last, and the one you remember longest. Rich, structured, and built for the long game, it comes from one of Burgenland's most storied vineyard sites and one of its most trusted family estates. Give it air, give it time, and it will give back everything.
About the Producer Hans and Anita Nittnaus, alongside their children, represent multiple generations of winemaking in Gols on the eastern shore of Lake Neusiedl. The Nittnaus estate is a family legend in Burgenland, known for red wines of real depth, structure, and genuine aging potential. Their knowledge of this particular landscape runs very deep.
Winemaking Blaufränkisch from the Altenberg vineyard is hand-harvested from old vines in deep gravel and loam soils and fermented in open vessels with extended maceration to draw out full structure and color. The wine is aged in a combination of large oak casks and smaller barriques, then given additional bottle time before release to allow full integration.
Country: Austria | Region: Gols, Burgenland | Grapes: 100% Blaufränkisch | Style: Dry Red
Tasting Note Deep ruby-garnet in the glass, with a complex nose of blackcurrant, dark cherry, pipe tobacco, and warm spice. The palate is rich and firmly structured, with confident tannins and a long, layered finish that reveals more with every sip.
Primary Flavors: Blackcurrant, dark cherry, pipe tobacco, warm spice, dark plum
Food Pairing: Roasted game, grilled lamb, hearty beef ragout, aged hard cheeses, duck confit
Fun Fact: The Altenberg, meaning old mountain, is one of the most storied vineyard names in Gols. Its deep gravel soils force vine roots far into the earth, producing wines with an intensity and mineral depth that is distinctly different from anything grown on the richer plains nearby.
