STEINROT Zweigelt 2022 | Weinviertel, Lower Austria
Dark, juicy, and completely satisfying. STEINROT means red stone, named for the iron-rich soils beneath the vineyard, and the wine carries that earthy, grounded character all the way through to the glass. This is Austria's most planted red grape at its most honest and most drinkable.
About the Producer Herbert Zillinger has been a pioneer of biodynamic farming in Lower Austria since the 1990s. His red wines are farmed with the same uncompromising care as his whites: no synthetic inputs, lunar-cycle harvesting, and a deep respect for the land as a living system. STEINROT is one of the clearest expressions of what that philosophy produces.
Winemaking Zweigelt grapes are hand-harvested and fermented with native yeasts in open-top vessels, with regular punch-downs to gently extract color and fruit. The wine is aged in large neutral oak to integrate and settle without picking up any wood character, then bottled with minimal sulfur to preserve its natural liveliness.
Country: Austria | Region: Weinviertel, Lower Austria | Grapes: 100% Zweigelt | Style: Dry Red, Biodynamic
Tasting Note Deep ruby in the glass with a vivid nose of dark cherry, blackberry, and a dusting of warm spice. The palate is juicy and full, with soft tannins and a balance that makes this wine as easy to enjoy on its own as it is at a full table.
Primary Flavors: Dark cherry, blackberry, warm spice, red plum, iron mineral
Food Pairing: Grilled steak, barbecue ribs, beef sausages, hard aged cheeses, mushroom dishes
Fun Fact: Zweigelt was created in 1922 by Dr. Fritz Zweigelt at the Federal Institute for Viticulture in Klosterneuburg, by crossing Blaufränkisch and Saint-Laurent. It is the only major grape variety named after its creator and remains a purely Austrian invention.
