Sommer Chardonnay Kalkschicht 2023 – Leithaberg DAC, Burgenland

"Kalkschicht" means "Limestone Layer" and that's exactly what you taste. This is Leithaberg Chardonnay stripped of all the oak and butter clichés, replaced with pure limestone minerality, yellow apple, and meadow herbs. Clean, precise, and slightly nervy. The Chardonnay for people who say they don't like Chardonnay.

Appearance: Pale straw with a greenish tinge, bright and lively.

Winemaking & Aging: BIO certified. Leithaberg DAC - one of Burgenland's most prestigious appellations, defined by its distinctive limestone-rich soils. Light-touch winemaking to preserve freshness and terroir. Rated 93 James Suckling.

Country / Region / Grapes / ABV: Austria, Leithaberg DAC, Burgenland | Chardonnay 100% | ~12.5% ABV

Tasting Note: Yellow apple, chalk dust, and meadow herbs on the nose. Dry and sharp on the palate,  almost austere in the best sense , with clean mineral acidity, a hint of herb, and a precise, refreshing finish.

Primary Flavors: Yellow apple, chalk, fresh herbs, citrus zest, mineral sharpness

Food Pairing: Grilled fish, steamed mussels, goat cheese, light pasta with lemon, or white asparagus

Fun Fact: Leithaberg DAC is one of Austria's most geologically distinct wine zones, named after the Leitha mountain range. The soil is almost pure limestone, the same type found in top Burgundy and Champagne regions giving wines a distinctive chalky tension and aging potential that sets them apart from other Austrian Chardonnays.
