Chardonnay Riefring Thal 2021 | Burgenland, Austria
Same family, same organic commitment, same grape but a different vineyard and a wine that has had time to breathe and open. Where Kalkschicht is sharp and mineral, Riefring Thal speaks in a fuller, rounder voice. This is Chardonnay with real depth and something to say.
About the Producer The Sommer estate in Burgenland is known for drawing distinctly different characters from each of its named vineyard sites. The Riefring plot sits in a slightly warmer, more sheltered valley position, producing a richer and more layered expression than the estate's more mineral-driven parcels.
Winemaking Grapes from the Riefring vineyard are hand-harvested and fermented with native yeasts. A portion of the wine sees light aging in neutral oak, adding integration and gentle creamy texture. The 2021 vintage was given additional bottle time before release, allowing its complexity to fully develop.
Country: Austria | Region: Burgenland | Grapes: 100% Chardonnay | Style: Dry White, Organic
Tasting Note White peach, ripe pear, and a hint of toasted brioche on the nose. The palate is textured and creamy but remains fresh and focused, with a long finish that unfolds slowly and rewards patience.
Primary Flavors: White peach, ripe pear, toast, cream, light spice
Food Pairing: Roast chicken, creamy pasta, aged semi-hard cheese, veal, white truffle dishes
Fun Fact: In Burgenland, individual vineyard names carry as much weight as appellation names. Riefring is one of the most prized sites in the Sommer portfolio, and this wine is made exclusively from that single plot.
