Szepsy Percze Furmint 2022 | Tokaj, Hungary
There are vineyards, and then there are vineyards with a story. Percze is one of the historic single-vineyard sites in Mád, the beating heart of Tokaj, and in the hands of István Szepsy — a seventh-generation winemaker who helped resurrect dry Furmint as a world-class style — it becomes something genuinely special. Precise, focused, and full of quiet tension.
About Szepsy: István Szepsy is the name behind Tokaj's modern renaissance. A seventh-generation winemaker from Mád, he was among the first to recognize the extraordinary potential of dry Furmint at a time when the region was still defined almost entirely by its sweet wines. His vineyards include some of the most celebrated historic sites in all of Hungary, and his approach is uncompromising: low yields, hand harvesting, organic farming, and minimal intervention in the cellar. Today his children continue the work alongside him, keeping the vision intact while bringing fresh energy to every vintage.
Appearance: Bright pale gold with green tints, clear and vibrant.
Winemaking & Aging: Hand-harvested from the Percze vineyard in Mád, organically farmed. Fermented with native yeasts and aged to express the individual character of this specific plot. Low residual sugar (5.5g/L) balanced by lively natural acidity (7.7g/L), giving the wine a bone-dry feel with great energy.
Country / Region / Grapes / ABV: Hungary / Tokaj, Mád / 100% Furmint / 13% ABV
Tasting Note: Citrus and green apple on the nose with a stony, flinty minerality running underneath. The palate is dry and focused, with bright acidity cutting through a core of ripe pear and white flowers. Linear, precise, and long on the finish. A textbook expression of what single-vineyard Furmint can be.
Primary Flavors: Citrus, green apple, pear, white flowers, flint
Food Pairing: Grilled pike-perch, roasted chicken with herbs, creamy pasta, fresh goat cheese, or simply a good piece of bread and butter. It also makes a brilliant aperitif.
Fun Fact: The number in some Szepsy wine names (like Úrágya 63 or Urbán 73) refers to the age of the oldest vines in that specific plot. The older the vine, the deeper the roots, the more concentrated and complex the wine. Percze doesn't carry a number, but its story runs just as deep.
